The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. On 1 March 2019, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030, with the aim to ‘prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems worldwide’. It requested the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to lead the implementation of the UN Decade, in collaboration with the Rio Conventions and other partners. The UN Decade covers terrestrial as well as coastal and marine ecosystems. A global call to action, it will draw together political support, scientific research and financial muscle to massively scale up restoration. The implementation of the Decade is guided by a Strategy (available on the UN Decade website) as well as an Advisory Board. This post is located in UNEP/Ecosystems Division, at Nairobi duty station. 

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Principal Coordination Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Develops, implements and evaluates assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions;
  • Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change;
  • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources;
  • Coordinates policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies;
  • Acts as a management focal point for the Flagships and related activities of the UN Decade;
  • Generates survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identify problems/issues and prepares conclusions;
  • Organizes and prepares written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.;
  • Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.;
  • Initiates and coordinates outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities;
  • Leads and/or participates in large, complex field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.;
  • Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.);
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting;
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in ecology, conservation, restoration or a related field is required. A first level university degree with a combination of two years of professional and academic qualifications may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management for conservation and restoration activities in multiple countries is required;
  • Experience mobilizing resources for international projects is required;
  • Experience managing multi-cultural teams in developing world context is desirable;
  • Experience with multi-partner trust funds or related partnerships is desirable;
  • Experience working with UN system or any other international organization is desirable;
  • A minimum of two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the official languages of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of Spanish or French desired. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.
