The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This post is located in UNEP's Executive Office at the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Executive Director, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
Responsibilities
- Developing, implementing and evaluating assigned programmes/projects; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; review relevant documents and reports; identifying problems and issues to be addressed and initiating corrective actions; liaising with relevant parties; ensuring follow-up actions.
- Performing consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
- Researching, analyzing and presenting information gathered from diverse sources.
- Coordinating policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
- Generating survey initiatives; designing data collection tools; reviewing, analyzing and interpreting responses, identifying problems/issues and preparing conclusions.
- Organizing and preparing written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications.
- Providing substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations.
- Initiating and coordinating outreach activities; conducting training workshops, seminars; giving presentations on assigned topics/activities.
- Coordinating activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and preparing related documents/reports (pledging, work programmes, programme budget).
- Planning and leading and/or participating in large, complex field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries.
- Assisting the Deputy Executive Director, through liaison with internal and external partners, on strategic political, policy and operational issues related to UNEP. Leading and coordinating the development of cross-cutting strategic policy directives, position papers, statements and briefings in accordance with the organizations priorities.
- Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
- Performing other related duties as required.

Education
- An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics, environmental science or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
Work Experience
- A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration, environment related field or related area is required.
- A minimum of three (3) years work experience at the international level is required.
- Experience working in an Executive Office or supporting senior management is desirable.
- Relevant environmental work experience in the UN context or in an international organization is desirable.
- Experience in drafting and overseeing the preparation of briefings, analytical reports, and papers, ideally on environmental topics, is desirable.
- A minimum of two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. NOTE: ''Fluency equals a rating of ''fluent'' in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ''knowledge of'' equals a rating of ''confident'' in two of the four areas.
