The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This position is in the UNEP-Ecosystems Division, Marine and Freshwater Branch/Freshwater Ecosystems Unit at the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Freshwater Ecosystems Unit the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the implementation and evaluation of projects; monitors and analyzes Programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions;
  • Supports effective project management in ensuring completion of key tasks and milestones by the deadlines, coordinating input received from outside parties and within the team to ensure timely compliance and reporting;
  • Research, analyzes, and presents information gathered from diverse sources;
  • Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies;
  • Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes, and interprets responses, identify problems/issues and prepares conclusions;
  • Prepares written outputs, e.g., draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications;
  • Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations;
  • Assists in the coordination of outreach activities including training workshops, seminars; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities;
  • Participate or leads field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries;
  • Coordinates activities related to budget funding (Programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget);
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting;
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Masters degree or equivalent) in international development, water resources management or a field related to environmental management is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in water resources management, environmental management or related field is required. Experience in programme/project management is required. Experience in writing proposals for fundraising and drafting reports is desirable. Experience working with stakeholders in the private sector, in the UN system or international organizations on water resources management is desirable. Minimum of two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desired. NOTE: 'Fluency' equals a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand), and 'Knowledge of' equals a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.
