This position of Director, Climate Change and Environmental Justice will lead ICCR’s shareholder engagement and advocacy to address climate change and champion environmental justice through engagement with the world’s largest corporations. This role requires both an understanding of shareholder engagement strategy and knowledge of the different strategies being used to press corporations to mitigate their environmental impacts on communities and the planet. It is part of the most senior tier of ICCR program staff and carries the opportunity to shape the future of ICCR’s Climate Change and Environmental Justice program together with ICCR members. The Director will collaborate with other ICCR program area leadership on cross-program strategies and advise executive leadership on emerging policy and corporate developments in the climate space. The candidate will also have experience in both supervision and team leadership, and will prioritize a collaborative work style both within the ICCR staff and when working with ICCR members and partners.

Major Responsibilities

Provide leadership, expertise, and strategic direction to ICCR members and the ICCR Climate team in implementing shareholder engagement strategies on Climate Change and Environmental Justice. This includes:

  • Oversight of campaigns led by Associate Directors and coordinating other campaigns directly with support from Program Associates;
  • Oversight of monthly leadership team and working group calls;
  • Coordination of shareholder engagements with target companies;
  • Oversight of the development of research and investor guidance for priority workstreams;
  • Coordination and oversight of the drafting of investor sign-on statements and letters;
  • Maintaining relationships with NGO partners and other stakeholder groups;
  • Providing guidance for ICCR member dialogues and resolutions.

Manage the climate team, including supervising staff (e.g. weekly meetings to assess progress and implement strategy), directing team meetings and retreats, working with Associate Directors on the strategic direction and details of the campaigns for which they are responsible, and collectively developing program-area related content for ICCR conferences and webinars.

Serve as a thought leader on climate-related corporate accountability issues and represent ICCR in public fora and industry conferences.

Develop strong working partnerships with key allies in the field including impacted stakeholder groups.

Engage with policymakers to advance climate policy priorities and draft or supervise the drafting of comment letters on relevant policy opportunities.

Support the continued funding for ICCR’s climate campaigns by maintaining relationships with funders and overseeing the writing of grant reports.

Collaborate with other ICCR staff, including other program directors and executive leadership, to coordinate around strategy.

About you

You have strong experience in (and a passion for) holding corporations accountable for the harms they cause to our planet (ideally with experience in shareholder advocacy) while being able to communicate effectively with the people inside those companies. You are a seasoned climate advocate with deep knowledge of the fight against climate change and the work to build a just transition to clean energy. You have strong relationships in the field of climate change mitigation and you have experience working in coalitions focused on social change. You also have experience supervising multiple direct reports, and are comfortable managing a team. You enjoy leadership development, excel at teamwork, and can manage multiple projects simultaneously. You can make complex issues accessible for multiple audiences. 

Specifically, you will have many of the following qualifications:

  • Deep knowledge and experience (10+ years) in climate change and environmental justice, OR in corporate accountability and shareholder engagement; and/or related fields;
  • Capacity to organize and lead dynamic, broad-based advocacy campaigns;
  • 3+ years of supervision and team management experience, including supervising colleagues at various career stages;
  • Experience building and supporting leadership teams of diverse parties working for social change;
  • Experience in public speaking, media, and other forms of public communication;
  • Strong writing skills.

Job requirements

  • You must have the ability to work in the United States. Unfortunately, ICCR is unable to sponsor applicants for employment visas for this role;
  • Ability to work on East Coast time;
  • Preference will be given to those in the NYC or Washington DC area. However, we are open to candidates outside of NYC who can travel to New York as needed for ICCR conferences and events;
  • Flexibility to travel as needed.
