Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), based in New York, United States. UNAOC is a United Nations entity that builds bridges between societies, promotes dialogue and understanding, and seeks to forge the collective political will required to accomplish these tasks. UNAOC works as a convener and facilitator to bring all sectors of society together to strengthen intercultural and interreligious dialogue to diminish hostility, and promote mutual respect and harmony among the people and cultures of the world. UNAOC's activities are fashioned around the five pillars of Education, Youth, Migration, Media, and Women as peace mediators in identity-based settings. The incumbent will report directly to the Director of UNAOC.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Ensures implementation of information programs to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome.
  • Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion, social media, digital trends and press coverage, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses.
  • Undertakes activities to promote digital media coverage of priority issues and/or major events, to include development of a media strategy and action plan, initiating pro-active media outreach efforts, conceptualizing digital campaigns, disseminating web materials and consulting with press on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage.
  • Produces or oversees production of a wide range (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.) of information communications products (e.g. web stories, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, audio-visual materials, etc.), to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution.
  • Undertakes missions outside the duty station to deliver required communication strategies pertinent to specific events organized by the Organization
  • Leads the strategy, planning, design, development and implementation of large, complex digital communication campaigns.
  • Manages and maintains UNAOC website and project microsites, to include conceptualizing content, producing multimedia materials, and implementing delivery mechanism.
  • Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books.
  • Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies.
  • Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc.
  • Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies.
  • Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent degree) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, digital communications, social media management, public administration or related area is required.
  • Experience using and managing professional digital/social media networks, accounts and implementing digital media strategies for international organization is required.
  • Experience in designing, developing, managing, administering and maintaining multiple websites, microsites, and digital platforms is required.
  • Experience engaging with digital and social media stakeholders and developing partnerships is desirable.
  • Experience coordinating, directing and overseeing a team of communication professionals is desirable.
  • Experience in the design, crating, and production of infographics, visual identity, interactive multimedia materials, and a wide range of digital assets is desirable.
  • Experience in coding in CSS HTML, and PHP is desirable.
  • Experience in managing content management platforms including WordPress and Drupal is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.
