POSITION SUMMARY:

Winrock is seeking a professional to lead the sustainable livelihoods component of an anticipated USAID-funded project in Zambia to scale up clean cooking technologies and fuels, while reducing charcoal production and use. The Lead for Sustainable Livelihoods will supervise local partners to implement and scale up livelihood efforts which provide alternatives to charcoal production in targeted areas. This position is contingent on receipt of donor funding.

Essential responsibilities:

  • Identify charcoal hotspots;
  • Develop strategies to provide alternative livelihoods for communities most engaged in charcoal production and trade;
  • Work with local partners to adapt and scale proven models for improving agricultural production to reduce the need for engaging in charcoal production;
  • Engage with local chiefs and leaders to get their commitment to reduce charcoal production in their areas;
  • Coordinate with enforcement agencies to support reduction in charcoal production.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Education:

  • Degree in agricultural economics, agriculture education, agricultural extension, agroforestry, or a relevant field.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience;
  • Zambian national preferred;
  • Experience with on- and off-farm alternative livelihoods and rural income generation;
  • Experience with successfully introducing sustainable livelihoods that reduce impacts on natural resources;
  • Experience with successfully promoting smallholder out-grower schemes;
  • Experience analyzing the impacts of different livelihoods on reducing deforestation;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with local Chiefs and Traditional Leaders, and local religious leaders.

Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and ability to motivate staff and partners to be accountable for project outcomes;
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and strong track record in meeting deliverables and deadlines;
  • Ability to provide oversight of financial and operational aspects of projects.
