The National Democratic Institute (NDI) seeks a Senior Advisor to contribute to the strategic direction and management of the Asia-Pacific team. The individual will provide senior level insight and analysis on regional developments and be responsible for oversight of the headquarters management of specific country and program portfolios, including in East Asia and the Pacific Islands. The Senior Advisor position is based in Washington, DC, with some travel to the region and other locations.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall oversight on assigned portfolios, including managing workflows to support country programs and field offices, and providing technical and political insight to program staff on relevant programming;
  • Leverage regional knowledge, relationships and political insights to provide strategic advice and counsel to program staff across portfolios, as appropriate;
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with US and regional policy makers, as well as government, academic, political party, civil society, diplomatic and legislative contacts;
  • Recruit, manage, evaluate and contribute to the professional development of staff on the regional team, in headquarters and the field offices, in consultation with the Regional Director;
  • Represent NDI at professional meetings and conferences with program partners, political and civic leaders, donors, supporters and the foreign policy community, and help in expanding NDI’s public outreach;
  • Assist regional staff with the development and execution of outreach strategies with donors, government agencies and other stakeholders;
  • Oversee the production of proposals, reports, memoranda and other publications;
  • Travel to the region on a regular basis to assess new program opportunities, participate in and evaluate current projects, and meet with key program partners and donors.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in political science, public policy, international development, or other relevant field;
  • At least 14 to 20 years of experience working in international development, including significant practical experience in at least one of the following areas: democratic governance, electoral processes, civic organizing, political party development, women’s political participation, youth engagement, political participation of marginalized communities, democracy and technology;
  • Experience managing a multicultural team in strategic planning, creative program design, and effective project implementation;
  • Proven ability to effectively manage, mentor and motivate staff;
  • Experience in managing complex programs in fluid political environments;
  • Knowledge of the Asia-Pacific region, underlying political contexts and dynamics, policy frameworks and active political players;
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and apply sophisticated political analysis to programmatic activities;
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior political and civic leaders as well as members of the donor and diplomatic community;
  • Knowledge of and ability to provide oversight and strategic direction for fulfilling US and other international donor requirements and regulations in financial management, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting;
  • Experience in developing and implementing effective outreach strategies for a variety of audiences;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; fluency in English required;
  • Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.).
