This new post provides an exciting opportunity to play a senior role at the heart of a well-respected network as we continue to expand our influence in the UK, while forging new allies internationally. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues across the UK international sector, build relationships with DFID staff, and develop respectful alliances with influential feminists in the Global South.

Overall role of the Policy Manager

  • To play a central role in the Gender Equality and Macroeconomics (GEM) project, leading policy analysis and advocacy on agreed policy areas, building international alliances, and managing GADN’s relationship with funders and partners;
  • To lead policy analysis and advocacy in agreed core priority areas such as safeguarding and the prevention of sexual abuse, and maintain relationships with target audiences including DFID staff.

Specific tasks

GEM project

  • With the Director, agree a strategy and work-plan for the project;
  • Manage the GEM work-plan and ensure that all of the GEM project deliverables are completed on time and to a high standard;
  • Undertake and commission research, policy analysis and the writing of briefings and other publications;
  • Identify advocacy opportunities and undertake advocacy in line with the work-plan, representing GADN externally;
  • Manage GADN’s communications work for the project, including webinars, with support from the Coordinator;
  • Identify core project partners and build and maintain strong and respectful relationships with feminist activists and academics in the Global South;
  • Coordinate our relationship with GEM project funders;
  • Ensure our members, particularly the Women’s Economic Justice working group, are kept informed of the project.

Core policy areas

  • With the Director and the Advisory Group, agree priority areas for advocacy and work closely with GADN’s Advisory Group and Working Groups to update GADN core policy messages;
  • Undertake and commission research, policy analysis and the writing of briefings;
  • Identify and organise advocacy meetings with DFID and other targets, and represent GADN where necessary;
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with key DFID contacts;
  • Organise meetings and webinars on priority topics for members and allies;
  • Build and maintain GADN relationships with academics and feminist activists in the global south;
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties necessary as part of a small Secretariat.

Management

The post is line managed by the Director of the GADN.

The Policy Manager will also work closely with the Coordinator, relevant Working Group Chairs, Chairs of the Board of Trustees and members of the Advisory Group, and with the Bretton Woods Project and FEMNET.

Person Specification

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Excellent understanding of women’s rights, gender equality and development issues;
  • Understanding of economic justice issues;
  • Understanding of feminist analysis;
  • Good political judgement and experience of advocacy in UK context;
  • Understanding of the UK political system and how to influence effectively;
  • Experience of representing an NGO or similar organisation in external meetings with senior decision makers and stakeholders;
  • Substantial experience of policy analysis, ideally on women’s rights or economic justice issues;
  • Proven ability to write clearly for a variety of audiences;
  • Experience of working internationally with other Civil Society Organisations and building respectful relationships;
  • Excellent personal communication skills;
  • Proven ability to organise and plan effectively and prioritise workloads;
  • Proven ability to work on own initiative with limited support;
  • Demonstrated commitment to women’s rights and gender equality.
