The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, an international non-profit organization tracking the human rights impacts of over 8000 companies worldwide, is seeking a highly-motivated person to join its natural resources team as a project manager on renewable energy & human rights. The successful candidate will lead on the implementation of a groundbreaking project to support a just transition to a low-carbon economy through advancing human rights in the renewable energy sector. The project will be part of a growing programme of work on renewable energy and human rights that has been covered in the Financial Times and Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Applicants must have:

  • 3+ years of experience managing complex projects with tight timelines, in coordination with external partners, and managing parallel workstreams; ability to show impact as a result of projects;
  • 5+ years of experience working on the renewable energy sector and/or climate justice issues with a strong emphasis on renewable energy;
  • Strong commitment to advancing human rights in the business sector and to combatting climate change;
  • Proven track record of working constructively with a range of stakeholders (including business, investors, civil society).

The Position:

  • The Project Manager will work closely with the Senior Researcher (based in Switzerland) and Deputy Director & Head of North America Office (based in DC) to lead on the implementation of a project to advance human rights in the renewable energy sector;
  • Our work on renewable energy is based on a belief in the essential transition to a low-carbon economy in order to combat climate change, coupled with the recognition that this transition will only be sustainable if it is done in a way that respects human rights;
  • The purpose of the project is to ensure that our transition to a low-carbon economy is both fast and fair. The project aims to increase respect for human rights in the renewable energy sector to prevent future abuse and support a sustainable transition to a low-carbon economy.

In order to achieve this, the project aims to fulfill the following objectives:

  • Encourage a race to the top among companies on human rights through a benchmark of renewable energy companies;
  • Empower civil society, in particular affected communities in the Global South, to hold renewable energy firms accountable to their human rights commitments and international law;
  • Encourage investors to collectively take action on improving renewable energy’s approach to human rights.

Specific activities include:

  • Manage the development of pilot methodology to benchmark renewable energy companies on human rights, including stakeholder consultation and a strong communications and outreach plan;
  • Organise webinars and other capacity building workshops to raise awareness about the renewable energy sector’s responsibilities around human rights with partners from a range of stakeholder groups in key regions (ie: Latin America, Southeast Asia, Sub Saharan Africa);
  • Draft and disseminate an updated investor briefing based on previous analysis on renewable energy companies’ human rights policies and practices with key partners;
  • Draft quarterly reports for project funders and work closely with Development Team to secure further funding for project;
  • Participate in regularly scheduled Global Team calls and ad hoc calls and meetings as needed.

  • Project management experience: 3+ years of experience managing complex projects with tight timelines, in coordination with external partners, and managing parallel workstreams; ability to show impact as a result of projectsl;
  • Subject matter expertise: 5+ years of experience working on the renewable energy sector and/or climate justice issues with a strong emphasis on renewable energy;
  • Representation skills: Able to foster productive, professional relationships with a broad range of contacts, including representatives of civil society, business and investors, and to represent the Resource Centre at high-level events and to external stakeholders;
  • Research & analytical skills: Able to search and identify relevant information online and offline; persistent in seeking out difficult-to-find information; experience with quantitative data analysis using Excel or other software;
  • Communications: Strong writing skills – including succinct writing and strong public speaking skills;
  • Strategic insight: Able to identify key opportunities to enhance impact of project within given resource and time constraints;
  • Teamwork: Able to operate effectively and constructively as part of a global team, and ensure smooth communication despite geographical distances between team members;
  • Self-initiative and motivation: Able to use own initiative, and work independently within agreed framework; motivated by achieving results and completing tasks. Able to work well under remote supervision;
  • Organization and prioritization: Strong organizational and prioritisation skills, enabling efficient and effective work;
  • Language skills: Fluency in English; other language skills an advantage.
