Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Social Policy and Population Section (SPS), in the Social Development Division (SDD).

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Director, Social Development Division, and direct supervision of the Chief, Social Policy and Population Section, the Associate Social Affairs Officer is responsible for the following duties:

  • Carries out policy-oriented basic research on selected aspects of critical areas of concern related to social development related SDGs including poverty and inequality, social protection, youth and job creation among other aspects of demographic transition, socio-economic issues and social development programmes to include collecting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources, analyzing it including through statistical and econometric tools, and drawing meaningful policy inferences, participating in the analysis of socio-economic planning and policy development in the Asia and the Pacific region.
  • Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
  • Develops and maintains reference/resource information on specific topics, policy-related issues, recent developments and trends in the field, etc.; liaises with NGOs, researchers, etc. to obtain and provide data and information; responds to various inquiries and information requests internally and externally.
  • Provides administrative and substantive support to expert group meetings, panel discussions, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, researching and proposing experts, handling logistics, etc.
  • Analyzes progress and developments in the implementation of socio-economic issues and social development programmes undertaken by Governments in the context of the 2030 Agenda; contributes to the development of mechanisms for monitoring of global and regional action plans in the field of social development.
  • Undertakes outreach activities in assigned areas, providing presentations and other inputs (e.g. articles, publications), and attending professional and NGO meetings.
  • Maintains awareness of current social affairs and related issues, to include relevant political, policy, or other developments in specific sector, country or region concerned.

Intergovernmental Support

  • Provides support to intergovernmental processes dealing with social development issues covered in the SDGs by: preparing inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies; following intergovernmental meetings and preparing summary reports and similar material; preparing inputs to statements by members of the Bureau and Secretariat staff to such meetings; assisting in the organization of panels, round tables, etc. on social development issues for intergovernmental processes.

Technical Cooperation

  • Compiles and analyses the data and other information necessary for the preparation of technical cooperation project proposals in the area of population and socio-economic development.
  • Prepares documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects.
  • Contributes to the preparation of material for the approval of regional, country or sectoral technical cooperation projects.
  • Monitors, backstops and assesses the implementation of technical cooperation programmes and projects.
  • Participates in fact-finding and advisory missions to government and other activities in support of work programme.

General

  • Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the section’s services.
  • Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics, sociology, statistics, demography, public administration, or other related social science.
  • A relevant first-level university degree in the above fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • For candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), a first-level university degree in the above relevant fields is required.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in socio-economic development, policy analysis, policy design and implementation, socio-economic research or other related areas. Experience working with an international organization is an advantage.
  • No experience is required for candidates who have passed the YPP examination.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
